Weyrling Training
Month 13
Month 1:
Weyrlings spends most of their time feeding, bathing, and oiling their new
lifemates. Any spare time and energy is spent on chores around the Weyr.
Weyrlings are also taught the basics of first aid. They start their drill
routines, marching in formation and following basic commands. They learn
about firestone, how to size, break, and bag it and are quickly put to work
doing that before every Fall. They also learn how to assemble and use a
flamethrower.
Month 2:
Second month weyrlings begin to learn a few things about the Weyr that most
people who aren't Weyrfolk don't, such as history, rank, and etiquette.
Drills become increasingly tiring and difficult as their lifemates are not as
dependent on their care every day, and the weyrlings have more time for other
duties.
Month 3:
Drills now include firestone tossing. Those who have done very well during
the past three months are given extra responsibilities as well as rewards
from the Weyrlingmaster. They learn advanced first aid in the third month
as well as basic self-defense and wrestling.
Month 4:
At last the dragonets are old enough to fly on their own. The
Weyrlingmaster's dragon may then have "drills" with the dragonets in the air
to practice take off and landing and to improve agility, strength and speed.
Once they get that down, they can go and hunt from themselves on the Weyr
grounds.
Weyrling drills continue in a more difficult fashion with the weyrlings
arranged just like a wing would be when it is in the air. Lessons in
air currents, cloud formations, and weather dynamics are taught for the next
two months.
Month 5:
This month is spent learning how to make and maintain riding straps. The
weyrlings can expect long boring lectures on how important daily maintenance
is, as well as many sore fingers for those who can't properly sew yet. Due
to the inevitable errors made, this particular part of training may become
very tedious, but a good Weyrlingmaster can't let his precious charges into
the air without being decently strapped in.
Month 6:
After learning how they can finally make their own riding straps. Dragonets
are measured again and again, and all Weyrlings learn how to adjust the
length of the straps on their still growing dragons. Once all straps pass
the Weyrlingmaster's meticulous inspection, they can practice putting them
on their dragons properly. Once that's down, the weyrlings are tested and
the first flights are taken!
Note: After this point, all restrictions on the Weyrlings' personal
relationships are lifted, though keep in mind that training is not over yet
and demands on their time remain high.
Month 7:
The dragons are then trained to fly with their new riders; take off,
landing, and getting accustomed to the air currents within and
above the Weyr are all practiced extensively. Elevator duty is then assigned.
Weyrlings are moved out of the barracks into new weyrs, with priority given
to the most outstanding weyrlings in the class.
Drills are now aerial. Anyone who doesn't keep up risks injuring themselves
and their dragons in collisions and other accidents. The Weyrlings practice
flight in formation, changing formation, and tossing firestone from one dragon
toanother.
Month 8:
By far the most dangerous times in the Weyrling training start here.
Weyrlings can expect long scary lectures of young riders who, not paying
attention before betweening, found themselves entombed in rock, buried
alive in rubble, charred by a another dragon, or simply vanished
completely. They learn about picturing a place in their mind and sending it
to their dragons. They also learn about how to stay calm in the event that
someone in the class dies.
Month 9:
Several straight flights outside the weyr are taken with the Weyrlingmaster
to let the weyrlings become accustomed to the view above familiar places.
Then, the weyrlings, one by one, are allowed to go between on their own to
a destination that the Weyrlingmaster has chosen. Depending on what happens
then, the Weyrlingmaster allows them to go between in smaller and then
larger groups. Drills also involve going between and emerging from between
in formation. The survivors get their next assignments as transporters for
people wishing to get from the Weyr to far away places and vice versa.
Month 10:
Finally, the Weyrlings enter the last phase of their training: Chewing
firestone and flaming. After the first practice flames with low grade
firestone, the weyrlings start practicing flying in formation, flaming, and
going between. By now, the Weyrleader and Weyrwoman will be observing them,
as well as the Wingleaders and Wingseconds who will be receiving the new
riders.
Month 11:
The weyrlings get their first taste of Threadfall. For one part of the class,
they follow the wings into the fight; for the other part they ferry firestone
to riders who need it. After they've joined all the flights, and, in most
cases, received their first scorings, they get their temporary Wing
assignments.
Month 12:
Since the Weyrlings are flying as riders now, no real official training goes
on during their last month, though if they have trouble adjusting, they
may be shuffled around or even sent back to the Weyrlingmaster to be
"straightened out."
Month 13:
Graduation! Temporary wing assignments become permanent ones.
Congratulations and clear skies! :)
Note: Male dragons are now old enough to participate in flights. Greens may
rise to mate after this time as well. Queen dragons may rise to mate at 18
months earliest unless permitted by Conclave.
