The Western Harper Hall

The Western Harper Hall is the brainchild of Master Ivelyn.  Though not as large as its counterpart at Fort Weyr, the Hall is in many was just as elegant.  A long, wide two-storied building with a grey-green slate roof and brightly colored stained-glass windows, the Hall dominates the western half of the courtyard.  Its brightly lit bay windows are a reassuring and welcoming sight even on a warm summer's evening, and it stands in sharp contrast to the rather gloomy and imposing graystone edifice that is the main structure of Ithaca Hold.

The ornately carved hardwood doors of the main entrance are reached by a short flight of steps.  They open up onto the main floor, which houses most of the teaching rooms, a Great Hall, and the dining area.  A staircase directly across from the entryway leads to the second floor, which is home to the Masters' and Journeymen's quarters, as well as Master Ivelyn's apartments.  A lower level contains the kitchens, drudges' quarters, storage facilities, and even a workshop for making and repairing instruments.  Apprentice quarters are in separate buildings, one for men and one for women.  Also on the lower level, between the apprentice quarters and the main  hall, are the bathing chambers, reachable by a passageway that connects all three buildings of the harper complex -- a fact much appreciated by apprentices hurrying to classes on cold winter mornings.

At present, the Hall is nowhere near full capacity, and there is a sort of eerie quiet that settles over the building in the very late and early hours.  However, Master Ivelyn has high hopes for the Hall, and it is his intention to make it home to a whole new breed of harper, one who is not afraid to experiment with new musical and artistic forms, and who, Ivelyn hopes, will in turn put the Western Harper Hall on the map.
